Editorial

Assalam-u-alaikum

Seventy years ago on 23rd March 1940 some honest capable and dedicated people decided to have a separate country for the Muslim minority of India which had no future in the coming schemes of the things.

In the next seven years they achieved their objective in the form of the birth of a new country on the map of the world. It is one of the biggest events of history to have a new country being born from the womb of such a big hostile mother (India) in spite of every resistance from both parents.

Lot has been written and even more will be forthcoming in future about the causes of such a magnificent achievement, but for a layman like me it was the perfect combination of clear vision, honest intent and selfless dedication and faith of the people who saw that dream.

These principles are as true today as they were 70 years ago, provided we have the same type of leadership available which unfortunately, is nowhere to be seen.

We commemorate such occasions with the object to learn from them, but at present we seem to have lost that capability to learn anything from any occasion, rather these occasions are more like the death anniversaries of some beloved forefathers for whom we neither have respect nor love, because we are too busy justifying our misdeeds and not even feeling ashamed of it.

Haven’t we heard that nations who loose the respect for their history eventually end up loosing their geography as well?

I wish and pray that Pakistan realizes the value the spirit and vision of 23rd March and every year from this year onward can proudly say that we are the custodians and legitimate heirs of great people who had promulgated the resolution popularly know as PAKISTAN RESOLUTION against all odds.

Health Corner - Tips by Dr. Zarqa

Did you know?

Why do we need salt?

  • It is important for our very survival, but it has to be in the right amount.
  • It is essential for making the heart beat correctly
  • It helps to maintain the correct water balance in and around the cells.
  • It helps to maintain the normal volume of blood in the body.

What if we consume too much salt in our diet?

  • Too much salt can cause hypertension.
  • Salt makes the blood vessels stiffer and therefore more pressure is required to circulate the blood around the body.
  • This puts a strain on major organs causing conditions such as
    Dr. Zarqa
  • Heart disease
  • Strokes
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Renal failure
  • Water retention
  • Osteoporosis

How much is too much?

  • The daily requirement of salt for an adult is 6 grams.

Which foods contain salt?

  • Salt is found in almost every food we eat.
  • The amount varies a great deal.
  • 75% of the salt we eat comes from processed foods
  • About 15% of the salt we eat comes from salt we add at the table or in our cooking.

Why should we reduce excess salt in our diet?

  • Blood pressure can be significantly lowered through diet.
  • To reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

Fact:

  • To help reduce the risks of hypertension refrain from adding salt to your cooking and don’t forget to read the list of ingredients on the processed food label. This will tell you the salt content. Go for low salt content as much as possible.
  • If we adhere to a well balanced diet we will receive the correct amount of salt we need to function normally.
