Assalam-u-alaikum

The PAD team hopes and prays that everyone has had a good start to 2009. We are starting this year with new hopes, aspirations and prayers for us, our country Pakistan and the whole Muslim Ummah.

The weather in Dubai is surprisingly pleasant and the rain has made it even more attractive in the past few weeks. It has been a busy month at PAD with a host of activities for the whole community. The much awaited “Evening with Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi” was a “house full” event with people braving the chilly evening to listen to their favorite living legend. There had been some very significant additions in the family of PAD in the form of Doctors Wing, Youth (Boys) Wing and, very recently, the Girls Wing. We hope that very soon PAD will become the nucleus of Pakistani Society translating the aspirations and feelings of the entire community through these vibrant sections. PAD’s Executive Committee has been keen to promote cultural, religious and literary activities during it tenure through lectures, meetings, seminars and functions with the intention to bring the community together.

As the tenure for the current PAD administration is coming to a successful end, a series of steps are being taking to hand over the day-to-day affairs of the association to an Ad hoc Committee and complete the election process for the next term. And there is good news! The fee for Long Term Membership has been reduced to AED 1,000 until end of February 2009. All Long Terms Member enrolled up to 28 February 2009 shall be eligible to vote for the upcoming elections expected to be held in March. You can also convert your Short Term Membership into a Long Term Membership by paying the difference in subscription fee. So hurry up!

In the end we would like all Pakistanis to remember our brethren in Gaza in their prayers and try to do everything possible to alleviate their miseries caused by cruel enemy and non-responsive world.

PAD is thrilled to present to you its latest wing, the 'Girls Wing'. Launched on the 19th of January, this wing is earmarked for young Pakistani women who envision uniting the evolving feminine strength of their society.

The ceremony was a short one during which the vision, mission, objectives and expected events of the wing were presented to the audience. The presentation was followed by a bustling election process during which everyone present was invited on stage to make a vote appeal for the positions of the office bearers. A sizeable gathering elected the following governing committee for the year 2009:

President: Ms. Anum Khaleeq
General Secretary: Ms. Qandeel Arif
Joint Secretary: Ms. Rabia Azeem
Treasurer: Ms. Aisha Riaz

Towards the end of the ceremony President PAD Mr. Riaz Farooq Sahi expressed his insightful thoughts on the auspicious occasion. The ceremony concluded when the girls expressed their solidarity for Gaza by wearing wrist bands of the Palestinian flag and observing silence.

Passionate to reverberate the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinah and making Pakistanis the leading community in the world, the Girls Wing extends an arm to all the young Pakistani women and hopes the youth of today realizes the power it holds, if united, and comes forward to join hands with us to work towards a better Pakistan, a better world and, a better tomorrow.

With the intention of providing fellow young Pakistani females an opportunity to have a closer look at the aspirations of the Girls Wing, an Inauguration Dinner is to be held on the 14th of February at the premises of PAD. Every young Pakistani female is encouraged to join the Girls Wing on this occasion and take the first step towards a better tomorrow.

- A Rare Evening with Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi

On 22nd of November PAD witnessed another evening full of Urdu lovers gathered on its lawn to see, listen, and enjoy the unparalleled humor of the living legend of Urdu MUSHTAQ AHMAD YOUSUFI. This was the evening culminating in to the night which, in spite of its coldness of weather and atmosphere, turned out to be warmest in spirit and took away the gloom from hearts and minds as morning sun evaporated the dampness of previous night.

Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi reading out his articles

Syed Mustaq Ahmad Yousufi was enthusiastically and most affectionately welcomed by the PAD Executive Committee represented by its General Secretary Syed Sabir Husain, and its Joint Secretary Mr. Inayat-ur-Rahman. Mr. Muhammad Khaleeq, as usual, introduced Yousufi and the audience to the history and achievements of PAD with his unique eloquence.

Dr. Fatima Hasan who flew from Pakistan, introduced Mr. Yousufi through her intellectual and literary MAQALA and his long-time friend and an ardent admirer Dr. Aslam Farrukhi provided glimpses of Mr. Yousufi’s works, humor, life and his style. H.E. Khursheed Ahmad Junejo, the Ambassador of Pakistan, welcomed Mr. Yousufi to Pakistan Association and thanked him for being kind enough to accept the invitation of Pakistanis living in UAE. The Consul General of Pakistan was also present at this memorable evening.
After completing all protocols, the awaiting audiences of over 200 Urdu and Yousufi lovers were provided with unprecedented pleasure of Mr. Yousufi’s unique style of humor which, in spite of biting cold under the open skies of PAD, provided a very warm atmosphere. “If laughter is the best medicine” Yousufi is the best doctor to dispense it. He is one of the rarest species of human beings whose sense of humor survived even after spending forty years in Banking Business. His unique sense of humor, crisp language and spontaneous punch lines keep the reader behaving like a lunatic, if watched from distance, reading his works in solitude.

We feel very fortunate of being born at a time of “YOUSUFI’s ERA”. He is an invaluable asset of Pakistan who is still unpolluted by internal and external forces and provides a breeze of fresh air in such a suffocating atmosphere. Pakistan Association Dubai, as a token of recognition of his status, position and his services to Urdu honored Mr. Yousufi by decorating him with Quaid-e-Azam Award of Literature. We wish Mr. Yousufi to remain amongst us as the symbol of hope, humor and good spirit.

- Lets Speak

Q1: How do you rate the level of education at the UAE schools as compared to Pakistan?
space space space space
The level of education is not better. The education is much better in Pakistan, especially our private institutions with modern curriculum and extra curricular activities.
M. Azim
It depends what is the comparison in between. Top level schools in Pakistan are as good as those in UAE. But they always give more value for money in Pakistan. Please keep in mind that.
Asher Ahsan
The level of education in UAE schools, specially those teaching Pakistani curriculum, is much lower than what it is in Pakistan. Schools back home offer a much better product
Sohail Anjum
For the same amount of fee, schools in Pakistan can provide far better education.
Adnan Amir

Q2: Do you think that the level of education in UAE is as per the fees charged here?
space space space space
I think that fees here are high and the level of education and other extra curricular activities are not matching the fees structure.
Asher Ahsan
No again, as people do not earn that much to justify their fee. The staff is of poor standard. (I met VC of a university who had very poor educational background.
Fazal Lasharie
There is no match at all. The lowest tuition fee payable here is more than the highest fee paid in some good schools in Pakistan. And referring to first question above again, we are not getting what we are paying for.
Sohail Anjum
No, level of education is poor, fee is spent by schools to cover their running expenses + make money. Its a proper business.
Adnan Amir

Q3: Is the exposure to various nationalities helping your child to broaden his horizon of learning?
space space space space
Yes, it broadens the horizon of the child but affects negatively on religious issues.
Kamran Munir
Exposure to have interaction with different nationalities is a good experience for the kids. But we need to be careful that they don't pick bad habbits.
Asher Ahsan
This is only a positive point that exposure to various nationalities, on one hand enhances love for their country and gives them a push to show their skills and abilities in front of other nationalities, and on the other hand, makes them understand and listen to the opinion of the others which helps them to live in peace and harmony.
Omer Janjua
Yes, it does provide an international experience, giving exposure to different religions, cultures etc.
Adnan Amir

Q4: Given a chance, would you prefer your child to be educated in Pakistan?
space space space space
Always. I am here but one of my sons is studying in Malaysia whereas the other is in Pakistan. Both are college level students. Why I don’t get them educated here in UAE is for two obvious reasons, cost and quality.
Sohail Anjum
Not at all. We have lost direction. Many of us in our anger at the West have turned to the Madrasah type of teaching which is completely bereft of any semblance of knowledge and education.
Haider Mehdi
I would definately prefer to educate my children in Pakistan but in a good institute.
Omer Janjua
I will prefer my child to stay with parents, at least till the age of 18.
Adnan Amir

Q5: What's the most important issue on your mind nowadays?
space space space space
Same like every one, Credit Crunch, Financial Crisis and what next to come.
M. Azim
How we can improve law & order in Pakistan.
Kamran Akmal
It is SURVIVAL here in UAE. The liquidity crunch, jobs lay offs, property bubble burst, equity market collapse, poor performance by big corporates and rising living cost will render survival very difficult if not impossible. The bigger concern is that the present crisis we are witnessing is not the iceberg but just the tip of it. 2009 is going to be one tough year.
Sohail Anjum
Economic Crisis & Job Security

- Everyone can make a difference
help-others

These days it seems to take a lot of courage just to get through the newspaper, and even more to watch the news. If one is brave enough to find out what is going on in the world, it becomes impossible to avoid the next question that inevitably arises: what am I doing to help? But then again, what can I do to help? I am an individual who does not have the knowledge, resources, or even the wherewithal to do anything. A lot of people are struggling with these questions. This is why we thought that in this issue of Pehchaan we would tell you about an ordinary woman, a grandmother in fact, who asked herself the same questions. The answers she came up with are, at the very least, inspiring.

The lady in question describes herself as “a simple lady”. She had a nephew with a condition known as HED, which means that he did not have sweat glands. The practical implication of this condition was that any physical activity could cause his body to overheat - simply put, playing could kill him.

One day, in exasperation, she exclaimed to her husband, “If we can put a man on the moon, there must be something we can do”. The logical extension to that line of reasoning, for her, was to call NASA and present her dilemma to them. So, while her husband looked on in disbelief, she proceeded to call NASA. She found out that they actually had a “cool suit” that they had used for some of the missions to the moon. Unfortunately, the suit cost approximately 3,000 US Dollars, a sum the grandmother did not have.

So she proceeded to organize bake sales, garage sales, and whatever else she had to do to raise the money. The fact that she was able to help her nephew is actually the least remarkable part of this story. What she did caught NASA’s attention. They followed her nephew’s progress and put together a documentary on his condition, her solution, and the resulting progress he made.

As can be expected, she was inundated with calls from parents who had children with HED. She decided to start a foundation. This enabled her to approach corporations as well as individuals, and she was able to help hundreds of children like her nephew.

Is this the end of her story? No. Today she, a housewife and a grandmother who never went to college, is a consultant for NASA.

All because she never stopped to focus on her own limitations. She used that energy to focus on the solution instead. She never stopped to look at the simplicity of the solution. She focused her energy on the problem.

This is an invitation to all of us to remember that if we start anything with a positive intention, God will take care of the rest. Perhaps we will actually be able to watch the news and see current events as opportunities for us to make a difference.
