The Dubai Traffic Department will soon start setting the radars on streets to take pictures also from the back of the vehicle.
That is, even if the radar doesn’t flash once a motorist passes it, it will if he/she accelerates above the limit soon after. And one would not know in which direction has a particular radar been set.
Major Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Deputy Director of the General Department of Traffic, said all radars on the highways and internal roads would be adjusted to facilitate capturing images from either direction.
The department recently conducted an experiment by changing the direction of two radars on Jumeirah Road.
“As many as 600 motorists were fined in just three days. The two radars were flashing the motorists as they crossed them and started speeding,” the official said. Comparatively, only 20 vehicles were caught speeding by the radars from the front. The official said that some drivers know the locations of these radars and slow down as they approach them.
Once they cross them, they again start speeding. This has made the department take the step. The radars will remain almost in the same locations but the directions would be changed. In December last year, the Dubai Police started installing radars at every 2km in a bid to reduce accidents due to speeding.
